Titling a Dog Course
1) 2014-2016 Student: Sam
Dog: Betsy
Dog Breed: Golden Retriever
“Roxanne got me interested in the possibilities of formally training a pup, based on her enthusiasm for what she was doing with Margot Woods, owner of Applewoods Dog Training. At the time, I was in search of an animal that would be well suited to my family and be easy to train based on the amount of time I had available for formal work.
Roxanne matched my needs pretty much perfectly when she got wind of a litter of Golden Retriever pups being born in Delaware. I flew to the east coast to pick up my pup the end of January 2013 and for the first time, saw firsthand some of the work being done at the Applewoods facility.
I liked it. It made sense to me as it had a lot to do with body placement and energy, which I am familiar with from years of handling horses of all stages. When I flew home I wanted to follow, as closely as I could, Roxanne's online program and so began a formal relationship with her via the internet and phone conversations.
We talked dogs all the time and she was always very encouraging and full of next steps for me and my pup, Betsy. Betsy progressed very easily with Roxanne's videos and phone conversations. In fact, Betsy and I walked into an obedience ring, neither of us having ever attended or seen one, and won three first places in a row to earn us our AKC Beginner Novice title with scores in the 190's.
I would call Roxanne the night before our trial and she would coach me on the things I needed to remember. That was that and we won!
I participated in her online Titling a Dog 101 Course in 2015. Not only was it a lot of fun, we learned a lot. We were also encouraged to continue working toward our goals with an active group that we could engage with, even if that was just reviewing everyone's videos at night and learning from them.
At this point, Betsy is ready to go back into the ring and try for her AKC CD*. This would not have worked had we not had the guidance and encouragement that Roxanne provides. As she improves and continues to learn, Roxanne is making it possible for people like me, who do not have access to Koehler trainers, to advance their education of the canine world. Things are always looking up. I plan on being able to continue my dog training education in this format!”
*Sam competed with Betsy in the fall of 2016 during a 3-day trial cluster in NV. Betsy’s scores ranged from 189-192 where she earned her Companion Dog (CD) title in those 3 consecutive trials and first place ribbons."
2) 2015-2016 Student: Ellen
Dog: Joy
Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever
“Hadn’t competed in AKC obedience trials for 20 years. Then, I met Roxanne and started training, Joy, one of my dogs in Sept 2015. I finished her FOUNDATION Course in November 2015, took her Retrieve Course in Jan 2016 and by April of 2016, found myself in the AKC obedience ring—after all those years. My dog, Joy, competed successfully and earned her Beginner Novice (BN), Companion Dog (CD) titles in 3 consecutive trials that week. We also, for the first time ever, competed (and our Team took 1st Place) in Rally Novice.
That 2016 summer, Joy easily took her AKC Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) Test and passed. That 2016 fall, Joy easily did her Therapy Dog International (TDI) test and passed. To finish out the 2016 year in glory, I competed for the first time ever, in Rally Novice with Joy, in 2 days, and in 3 back-to-back Rally Novice Trials. Yup, you guessed it, Joy easily qualified in all 3 trials and earned her RN title.
ALL TOTAL, in one year, as a result of Roxanne’s training, Joy earned 4 AKC titles and passed her TDI test. Unbelievable? Nope, perfectly doable with Roxanne’s training, coaching and steady encouragement. THANK YOU, Roxanne!”
3) 2015-2016 Student: Allison
Dog: Iris
Dog Breed: Labrador
“Roxanne has been incredibly patient, firm and encouraging in her work with us. She has very high expectations which keeps me motivated to get out and practice every day. She tirelessly and quickly answers all my questions and concerns. She also knows this training method inside and out and is always able to explain a technique or method so that I'm able to understand.
In our time working together, I had to move out of the area for work. Honestly, my biggest strike against moving was that I thought I would no longer be able to work with Roxanne! So, I'm incredibly thankful that Iris and I have been able to continue our work with her through different media like her online blog, text, phone and e-mail. Roxanne has been wonderfully accommodating and flexible.”
*Allison competed with Iris, for the first time ever, at the Labrador Retriever Speciality April 2016. Iris earned her Beginner Novice (BN) & her Companion Dog (CD) titles in 3 consecutive days of competing. Iris also competed, for the first time ever, as part of a Rally Team where our Team placed first. Allison took home LOTS of prizes and ribbons.
4) 2014-2015 Student: Robin
Dog: Doll
Dog Breed: Decker Rat Terrier
“I received a lovely Decker Rat Terrier puppy in Feb. of 2014. I have had dogs before and managed to teach and train them to be decently behaved dogs for our family. However, I always felt I could do a better job of training them with some instructions.
Roxanne Lee encouraged me to take her online course to raise up this puppy to be a great companion dog. I also wanted to title my dog as I will be breeding her and furthering the line of an excellent breed of dog.
Roxanne's program, from puppy raising, to getting a dog and handler ready for the show ring, has been exemplary. At every bump and hiccup in the journey, she has been most helpful and able to explain her process via online videos and phone conversations.
I am not the best student in the world as my time and attention gets distracted with life, but I will say I have a very well behaved dog at this point and my dog is now two years old. We will continue to train with Roxanne's online courses as we live several thousand miles away.”
*Robin has competed with Doll and earned 2/3 Beginner Novice (BN) legs. Robin plans on completing Doll’s BN title as well as competing with Doll to earn her Companion Title in 2017.
5) 2013-2016 Student: Ziva
Dog: Nava
Dog Breed: German Shepherd
“I’ve shared my life with loving dogs for over 50 years, long before children and grandchildren came into the picture. Like many folks, I never went through formal obedience training with any of my dogs and never thought it was necessary until I met Roxanne, my friend and mentor who “eats, breathes, and sleeps” dogs.
Through Roxanne’s guidance and support, the relationship I now have with my GSD (“Nava”) has reached a new level of mutual respect and love. Having gone through obedience training with Nava, I feel infinitely more confident when she is with other dogs, with children and adults, or by herself off-leash. She is now an accomplished and titled AKC Therapy Dog Excellent that I proudly bring to hospitals and nursing homes. And, I admit, it’s a thrill when people gush over my well-trained dog.
As an added benefit of Roxanne’s encouragement and training, Nava and I have started competing at various AKC events. She has already earned four “Obedience” titles (CGC, BN, CD, CDX) and three Rally titles (RN, RA, RE)! I would have never dreamed that I could find so much fun and challenge in the “sport of dogs.” And Roxanne has been there for us every step of the way! I know there are many trainers out there, but I consider myself blessed to have found one who is as knowledgeable, professional and caring as Roxanne.”
*Ziva and Nava competed in 2015 when Nava earned her Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title in 4 trials. Ziva is currently training Nava in Utility exercises with Roxanne coaching her. Ziva is aiming to compete with Nava in 2017 to earn her Graduate Open, Versatility and Utility titles.
